Cutting Mat Board

One of the purposes of my blogs is to help other artists to learn from my mistakes.
Today I needed to cut two pieces of mat board for my square foot paintings. So I carefully measured my mat board using a 12" x 12" blank canvas board for my template. Remember, the window in the mat board must be slightly smaller than the piece of art, so it doesn't fall out of the frame. Well, I knew this of course and measured very carefully. And that black mat fit that 12" x 12" board perfectly. So I went ahead and used the same measurements for the gray mat board.

The problem came when I took my painting, and laid the mat board on top of it. I had forgotten that every painting has a 1/2" white strip around it from the tape. So now, a smidgen of that white margin shows no matter how I place the mat board. It's things like this that make me want to run screaming into the night.

Yesterday I was painting on the lawn. I picked up the easel to put it away and the painting fell face up on the grass. So I lunged for it and bumped the folding table. The palette fell off on top of the painting jelly side down. Oops. I wiped it off the best I could. I think I can save it. We'll see.

As you can see, it's getting harder and harder to finish a painting a day. I'm going to have to abandon the project. The rest of my life is becoming unhinged because I'm behind on so many things, and now it looks like we may have to move. I can barely keep up with the daily paintings in a stable environment. And I want to finish all the paintings I started on my trip, some of which I'll show down below.

Roses Meet Darwin

I needed to do something simple for today's painting so I did some roses with a double loaded brush. They looked a little lonely so I added the lilacs.

Yesterday's painting was a mixed media affair with Darwin from a PBS special I was watching at the time.

Strange Gourds Still Life Painting

I tweaked yesterday's painting a bit. The right side Italian cypress tree was leaning too much. I made some other minor improvements as well.
Then it was on to today's painting. I bought some of these strange ornamental gourds to paint before going on my trip, and sadly, one of them was already moldy. So I tossed it and figured I'd better paint them today before the other ones get soft. It was more challenging than I thought. And I had a brown background which just wasn't doing a thing for me so I repainted it blue and white. When it's light out again I'll have to do some minor fixing, but it's as done as it's going to get tonight.

On the train coming home I made some composite sketches of views along the train route. This was a collection of images I saw between Simi Valley and Chatsworth. I used the sketch to make this painting tonight. And once again, cypress trees show up in my art.

Home From My Trip

I managed to start a new painting every day of my trip. Circumstances did not allow me to finish any of them, so I have my work cut out for me this week. I postponed my Etsy shop opening until Dec. 15. 2011 so that I could get more descriptions written. I really need to get a laptop so I don't get behind on work when I'm traveling. My family just doesn't understand that I need at least 3 hours a day on the computer, not the 3 minutes they were allowing me while visiting them. I think I got photos of all the paintings except the one I did late last night. I haven't had time to start a painting today yet.

Painting With Strange Shapes

I have spent many hours today on a painting that is still not finished. My hands, however, are finished, as well as my shoulders. Time to give it a rest. Sometimes it may not be possible to finish an entire painting in one day. I just have to accept that and not beat myself up for it, right?

And tomorrow I'm going out of town. I'll take my paints and stuff with me, but I won't be posting them until I get home in a few days.

I always thought if I could paint horses and people I could paint just about anything, but both are still a challenge to me. Next time I'll need to be careful not to get the nose so close to the edge of the paper. This is going to be difficult to frame.

Today I got to paint outdoors, in public, from life. People mostly ignored me. So I didn't have as much performance anxiety as I expected. I did get interrupted a lot so it took me most of the event to do one painting. And I didn't get to work on any of my other projects. I like how it came out though. I'm learning more each day.

I started my first paintings today for the Square Foot Art Gallery project. I did an abstract painting I'm going to call Ribbons. I put gesso on a piece of Bristol Vellum. Then I painted it with gouache and water color sticks.

For the next one I wanted something a little down home and friendly so I painted 2 folk art chickens. I love painting chickens for some reason. It always makes me happy. It took me most of the day to do these two paintings. Part of the reason is the gesso kept fading into the paper. I had to repaint the stripes and dots three times.

I'm working on a mixed media piece of a belly dancer. I did the foundation drawing in crayons. I went ahead and scanned it, just in case I destroy it while doing the watercolor wash over it. Now I have to let it dry completely before I can scan it again.

I've been playing around with a new logo today. I am learning to use Photoshop. It's frustrating because I'm used to paint shop pro. For example, I couldn't find how to make a negative image so I had to look up a tutorial. That's because on Photoshop it's called 'Invert' not 'Negative'. Anyway here are some of my attempts today. I also can't figure out how to meld two photos together to make a banner. So much to learn, so little time.

Up until now I've just been putting my photos on a Flickr account in a wild and abandoned fashion. Last Sunday at the archery range I drew a cute archer bear in my sketchbook. I wanted to add him to my collage so I traced him with a permanent pen on tracing paper, and glued the tracing paper right to the project with gel medium. Then I painted him with gouache. The funky birds were stamps I carved. I stamped them onto lined paper. Then I had them printed onto plastic. I glued the plastic to the watercolor base with the gel medium. If you look closely you can see the Korean text underneath the other images. It adds so many dimensions. To see the details, click on the photo. Then once it loads, click on it again. The shiny paint is some pearlescent watercolor that I picked up at Art Supply Warehouse.

Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival 2011

Last night we went to the Laguna Sawdust Festival. They are running specials, and Anaheim folks got in free last night, so we couldn't resist.

I had rather a strange night though. I admired one artist's chainmaile booth. She heard me say 'chainmaile' and rolled her eyes and then I got the big speech on how 'only idiots think it's chainmaile and they go to one Ren faire and think they are experts." I thought it best to just smile and nod and move on. I'm not sure how she expects to make any sales with that attitude.

I did look around for some of my favorite artists from years past and spotted some of their booths but they weren't in them. I'm sure Tuesday is a slow day and they might take that day off to take a break from the busy weekend crowds. You can buy stuff from their booth even if they aren't there. They have registers at the front.

The glass blowing demo is always one of the highlights. I'll share photos when I have time to get them off the memory card.

When using oil pastels I get effects and feelings that I don't get from other mediums. I'm not sure any of this is art anyone would actually bother to buy, but it makes me happy and I love to experiment.

Four New Pen and Ink Drawings

I posted all my new pen and ink drawings to a new site I joined called RTIST.com. I joined a couple of weeks ago and had nothing there for people to look at. I could have put them on Etsy, but Etsy is overrun with crafts and vintage items. Fine art doesn't seem to do all that well there. So I'm looking into new areas.

I'll love to show you photos, but I've never figured out how to take decent photos of white paper with black lines indoors. I'll have to wait for daytime to try for photos. Then I can take them outdoors.

I just talked to some friends today and they got a pottery wheel. I've had college level pottery classes and hopefully I'll be able to help them out so they aren't reinventing the wheel. They don't have a kiln yet. They are trying to get a used one that can handle pottery and glass. They also got an old loom that they are weaving on, and they said I can take photos next time I go out there. I just wish we lived closer. It's about a 45 minute drive to their place.

Anyway, here is today's drawing. I've been bitten by the drawing bug lately and wore out my hands. Drawing can be so tedious and frustrating, so I'm constantly reminding myself to have fun and do my best and if I screw it up it's not the end of the world.

I didn't realize I had followers over here. My apologies for not posting more often.

I've been working on illumination and scrolls for the SCA lately. That is to say, I'm learning how to do it so I can offer my services and help out. I took a class on it at the Collegium in Fullerton a few weeks ago and if I can get to the next meeting I can show them where I am and get some tips on how to proceed. I need to know what kind of ink to use that is compatible with the gouache I'm using. And I couldn't even afford the $10 a tube gouache they recommended, so I hope what I have won't be a disappointment. They aren't paying me to do art, and they sure expect an awfully lot for free. But on the other hand, it's good practice for me and will help my social life I hope. I never set out to be a hermit. And they do appreciate you when the moment of glory comes and you hand them their scroll. Some members have been waiting for years for their awards scroll.

Sometimes when I'm tired I forget my ideas of things I'd like to do. So today after going to an art festival I had the idea to paint 1000 5x7 paintings on canvas. Each one will be numbered and retail for about $50. I'm not sure if I want to do nudes, or landscapes or flowers or animals or a mixture of things.

Update: I am once again working on this idea. Only now I'm doing square foot paintings at the rate of one a day. I opened a new Etsy shop just for this project. I called it the Square Foot Art Gallery, because people can go there to see all the paintings, even if they don't play to buy anything just yet.

Etsy sellers have been really supportive of my blogs lately. I think everyone just about on Etsy has discovered the value of social networking on sites like blogger, gather.com, ning and Twitter. Everytime I'm in a chatroom within minutes someone will ask if anyone has a blog, and then the url trading begins. I blog every day and I use Twitter.com every day. Those are the two big ones for me.

Update on Thanksgiving weekend 2008

Just wanted to talk about my current projects. David Brunetta is still working on my dagger. He should have the cabachon by now which came from etsy artist Spikestoneworks. But David is also super busy with commissioned work so I'm sure he'll get to it when he gets to it.

Etsy sales are non existant for me right now, so I'm not focusing on Etsy much. I did go by my three etsy shops yesterday and renew some items and change the feature items at the top of the page. I spent an hour an in the Etsy chatroom assuring people I didn't drop off the face of the earth.

I'm working on some archery gear. I want to finish some arrows and make a new bracer and quiver. I love leatherwork but I just can't seem to get around to it.
Every time I do it it is like learning all over again.

I finished a knitted headband this morning and started in on another one.
I better go eat breakfast before my food gets cold.

I just bought the Speedball Ultimate Screenprinting Kit. I can't wait to see my original art on t-shirts, aprons, hats, and prints. I still need some supplies before I start like freezer wrapping paper, water resistant masking tape, and special light bulbs. But after the holiday madness I should be able to start printing things, if not sooner. I'm chomping at the bit.

Yesterday I launched my new line of ACEO's, which stands for Art Cards Editions and Original. They are the size of baseball trading cards (2 1/2" x 3 1/2" and artists and fans collect them.

My medium of choice for these is spraypaint on posterboard for a super high gloss finish. Now you can own an original miniature painting of mine for a mere $14.00. Hopefully that will satisfy my fans who don't have the dough for a $300 painting.

I've been very busy trying to stay out of the sweltering heat and humidity of July.
For the rest of you on Blogger, you may have noticed you don't get that many readers. Today I found out that if you go to Settings and then Publishing, there is a button that allows your blog to be pinged. Some of mine were set to 'yes' and some to 'no' so it's no wonder people weren't seeing my updates. Check yours and set it to 'yes' if you want blog pinging software to find you and let people know when you've published something new.
I also signed up for Technorati.com and made a watch list so I could see what people were saying about me, my shop and my life. Just remember if you talk smack about people it may get back to the very person you were talking about. Especially if you call them by their real name, their screen name or their on-line store name. And things your write on the internet can stay online for years and years and years. So use some wisdom there.

Original Knitted Dolls

My most recent project is a book of knitted dolls. I'm working on the first doll right now. The body will be made with yarn named "Linen" an off-white color. I wanted a rosier white, but that's all the store had. I can get another color for the next doll. I have about 12 planned. But I won't spill the beans yet.

I've been so engrossed in the world of art lately, I thought I'd come up a minute for air and to write a blog post.
On March 1, 2007 I set up a Gourd Art Display at the Buena Park Public Library in Buena Park Ca. So please go by and take a look if you are in the area. The Display will be there until the end of April.

I'm working on a chainmaile belt right now to wear with a LOTR's gown. I also finished a circlet today for the BEADS4You winter challenge on etsy. I took some photos but need to edit them and maybe take some better ones.

I want to do more Folk Art because it's such a hoot to do.
And I started the Etsy Zoo on Flickr. It's a game with a different animal theme each week. The current animal is the PIG. I know the animal for next week, but I'm not telling until Sunday.

I just added new things to my etsy store here: htt://www.Pigglewiggins.etsy.com. I sold two of my amigurumi cupcakes, and took the third one to Michael's for the display board, so I'll have to make some new ones.
I've been bitten with the drawing bug again and just finished a portrait of a fashion model. Now I'm working on one of a calico cat. The grid method is tedious but more likely to produce a good likeness of something. I really need to get a scanner though. Pencil drawings are difficult to photograph because with flash bounceback it wipes out the delicate lines, and without a flash you can't get a sharp image. Office Depo will scan images, but they want $2.99 per scan. Blah.

I started a new painting of a woman holding flowers today. I was working on it outside until about 10 AM when the temperatures skyrocketed again. I think it was 100 degrees today. The whole state is under an energy alert notice to avoid brown outs.
I'm also beading a mermaid on my loom, but I don't have the color for the arms yet so I had to stop until I get some.
I finished the 'Dead Men Tell No Tales" beadwork but now I have to decide if I want to turn it into a necklace or a hatband. It's going to be hard to read wrapped around a neck.

I got the roving I ordered from Etsy, so I'll be able to work on my felted juggling balls tomorrow. They are ready to go through the wash again, and then I can start adding colors.

We drove by the Indian Store today and it was closed for the 4th of July. It would be nice if they'd put that on their answering machine message now wouldn't it?

Anyway, I ended up getting the red seed beads I needed at a Michaels. So I've started working on the fringe for the Sundancer doll. Now I'm really enjoying it.

I also picked up at Michael's some animal print clay beads for a future project. And I got some little star shaped, heart shaped, and flower shaped wooden boxes to paint and sell on Etsy.

I'm taking a break from beading to let my eyes rest. I'm taking some advice from the aforementioned website to do the fringe last so I don't get all tangled up in it while I'm beading everything else. The fringe is probably the most fun, so it is definitely hard to resist not just going for it. I'm happy to be making good progress this morning. I definitely need to add some beaded items to my etsy store at http://www.pigglewiggins.etsy.com. I haven't put any up there yet but I know I have some stashed around here that I need to post. Especially the felt pin dolls.

Every now and then I'll run across a website that reminds me of a long forgotten project that I meant to do. I was looking for a new beadwork project to show off on Flickr, and I ran across this site: http://www.flameweaver.com/ that tells how to make a beaded doll with a polymer clay face. Now I've done beaded dolls and I've made faces and by some miracle I knew exactly where they were. And there I was, off on a new beading project, dying to use those faces I had made years ago. But as I sat down and went through one bin of beads, I came across a bone sun face that I decided to use first instead of the women's faces. The creative process can be distracting like that sometimes. Anyway, I went with some soft suede and started the doll. I had forgotten how tedious beading through leather is. I'm guessing it will take twice as long as if I'd used fabric or felt. The good news is it will probably last twice as long too.
As I was working on it, my boyfriend told me the Indian shop at Hobby City is going out of business, and I know they carry a full line of seed beads in every color of the rainbow, so I plan to go check out their sale tomorrow (if they are even open on a Mon.). I haven't gotten to do beadwork in a while so it's good to be working with it again.

Feb. is moving right along. I am painting as many wooden eggs as I can for the Easter season. I have 30 started.
I'm also drying apples for apple head dolls. First you carve a face on a peeled apple; then you dry it out at a low heat. That causes it to wrinkle and shrivel up. Then you add teeth, eyeballs, hair and a body and clothing. It's a long process. So if you need one for a special occassion, please give me a lot of notice.
